Installing ubuntu 10.04 and KDE

KDE 4.4 looks good on the Ubuntu 10.04. Yup, finally have the time to upgrade but I only had the Ubuntu CDROM, so later after the install had to manually install KDE4.

Using reference from my previous blog on Installing Kubuntu 9.10. Launch from KMenu the Synaptics or Kpackagekit to install additional applications and libraries. Below is a checklist of items to install.

note: to install via the terminal (CLI), e.g.

Plasma widget error - "could not create a python scriptengine"

In Kubuntu 10.04, Adding widgets may give webkit and scriptengine errors. Here are some of the solutions.

"could not create a python scriptengine"
When installing Solar System widget to desktop, that error appears. Solution is to install plasma-scriptengine-python, e.g. at the terminal (CLI) type;

sudo apt-get install plasma-scriptengine-python

"could not create a webkit scriptengine for the scripted image widget"
When installing Scripted Image widget to desktop, above error appears. Solution, install plasma-scriptengine-webkit. E.g. at CLI type;

sudo apt-get install plasma-scriptengine-webkit

Thinking of changing the blog template

Well coz it’s been a while since I really blog these days. This is especially due to the existence of Facebook and Identica/Twitter. I used to blog alot but now any personal post I no longer post it here, only in Facebook. What to do with this blog? It’s like a place where I throw code snippets stuff now and then, which primarily is for me, to grab later on.

Twitter is much faster to post, as I don’t have to put in so much thought to express myself. It’s so much easier to post short notices and pics these days using Twitter. Writing these 2 paragraphs is not easy, I really have to think to compose the words! The days when they are very fluid are over now. I’m getting old.

You know, one other thing that’s been keeping me real slow in updating the blog is I kinda have this feeling that I don’t have the freedom to write as much as in the old days. Maybe because I’m well aware of the audience of this blog now or maybe I don’t have to ramble on as much anymore. See, old age catching up. Arrghh!!

Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa the Movie

A couple of weeks ago I saw a trailer of the coming Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa movie produced by KRU Studios. Being one of the very small majority who actually read the Hikayat when I was in my teens and as a history buff I was of course elated that piece of local history (and legend) is being made into a movie.

Until I saw the part they portrayed the Romans (or Rum as in the annals). I could already screamed at that moment! They actually portrayed the Romans (or Rhomaioi as the Greeks called themselves then) like something that came out from the comics; bright brass cuirass, Trojan headress and blue-eyed blonds. Note to costume director, the Romans seldom wear brass cuirasses except if you are a noble or higher ranked. Mostly wear chain-mail over tunic or a leather cuirass and are usually armed with the throwning spear septum and short sword gladius. In fact towards the end of the Western Roman Empire, much of their army consisted of Germanic "barbarians" like the Goths.

I really don't know which joker they hired as a history/literary consultant, but Rum actually referred to the area of what was the Byzantium or Eastern Roman Empire and so was more Greek than Latin. Rum was also what the Seljuk Turks called their domain when they conquered the Anatolian Plains from the Byzantines.

Also by the time the Hikayat was written the Western Roman Empire has fallen for over 600 years.

I am very disappointed to also see Mano Maniam portraying as what seems to be an Indian trader with a stereotypical Indian accent . To see one of Malaysia's finest actors reduced to such a role is heart breaking.

This shows that the jokers at KRU Studios are not serious at all in bringing a local epic to the silver screen. While I am aware that the Hikayat is a mix of the historical and fanciful, a cursory Wikipedia search will yield much information.

Do they even know that Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa is also known as Sejarah Kedah?

I cannot speak for others but to see a Thai movie (Queens of Langkasuka) that chose to portray the early Malay kingdoms (in this case Pattani) closer historically is quite sobering. Why can foreigners to tell our stories and history in an unbiased way and closer to the fact?

Will I watch it? Possibly. I may not like it. But I always make it a point to support local productions whenever I can.

Installing apache mod_fastcgi(fastcgi module) on CentOS 5

In the previous post, I have written about installing apache mod_fcgid module to enable fastcgi support on apache. This time, I will write on how to install mod_fastcgi module to enable fastcgi module on apache installed on CentOS 5. Since by the time of this writing, there is no rpm for apache mod_fastcgi, we have to compile the mod_fastcgi module.

1. Install requirements for compilation

# yum install httpd-devel apr apr-devel libtool

2. Download latest mod_fastcgi source code

# cd /opt
# wget http://www.fastcgi.com/dist/mod_fastcgi-current.tar.gz

3. Untar the package.

# tar -xvzf mod_fastcgi-current.tar.gz

4. Install the module. You can find the installation guide on the INSTALL.AP2 file. We have to specify top_dir in the make and make install commands because we install apache2/httpd using yum

# cd mod_fastcgi-2.4.6
# cp Makefile.AP2 Makefile
# make top_dir=/usr/lib/httpd
# make install top_dir=/usr/lib/httpd

5. Add "LoadModule fastcgi_module modules/mod_fastcgi.so" to /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf to tell apache to load the new module

6. Restart apache

# /etc/init.d/httpd restart

7. You can assure that the mod is loaded by apache2, by looking at /var/log/httpd/error_log

# grep -i "FastCGI" /var/log/httpd/error_log 

[Wed Aug 11 12:26:27 2010] [notice] FastCGI: process manager initialized (pid 8853)

Installing apache mod_fcgid(fastcgi module) on CentOS 5

For apache to support FastCGI, you have to install either mod_fastcgi or mod_fcgid. In this example, I will show how to install mod_fcgid on existing apache webserver on centos 5.

First of all, the rpm is available at kbsingh's centos testing repository.To install kbsingh's centos repository:

1. Download kbsingh-CentOS-Extras.repo to /etc/yum.repos.d/

# cd /etc/yum.repos.d
# wget http://centos.karan.org/kbsingh-CentOS-Extras.repo

2. Enable karansingh's testing repo by setting gpgcheck to 0 and enabled to 1 in the [kbs-CentOS-Testing]

# sed -i "s/enabled=0/enabled=1/g" /etc/yum.repos.d/kbsingh-CentOS-Extras.repo

3. Install mod_fcgid

# yum install mod_fcgid

4. Restart apache, and verify whether fcgid_module is available by using the second command below

# /etc/init.t/httpd restart
# httpd -t -D DUMP_MODULES

5. If the module is still not loaded, add "LoadModule fcgid_module modules/mod_fcgid.so" to your /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf, and restart apache.

That's all :)

How to enable sound recorder in Ubuntu 10.04

I'm using Skype in Ubuntu 10.04 and unable to communicate via video call as i cant enable sound recording. So, i've installed GNOME Alsa Mixer and changed some settings and it WORKS now !!!

Just few steps and sound recording works.

1) sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer
2) Go to Application > Sound & Video > GNOME ALSO Mixer
3) It will open a control panel

4) Just check the Rec checkbox and control the volume for capture
5) Done

KDE desktop – ick!

I hate it. No matter how much I tried to get used to it, it’s just not working for me. It installed a horde of these K apps that I don’t really like. This is the last time I ever will try KDE. LXDE is better, maybe Fluxbox even better who knows. I’m going to try that one after this.

The Case Of Runaway Clock

This unique problem I have never encounter before. After we adjust the time and install Network TIme protocol Service (NTP) the clock is still drifting for more than 8 hours in a day.

I had Google for an answer, its may happened be because of the internal clock in the Linux operating systerm. In detail time drifting occurs because of changes made by the operating system.

In-depth, hwclock depend on the file /etc/adjtime to check for drifting information to make the adjustment and /etc/adjtime will make the correction to system to make sure the clock back in order.

My problem occur may due to drifting information below ... Look at the number 550.026225

I delete /etc/adjtime, adjust the time and hwclock -w to sysnc with hardware clock and a new /etc/adjtime will be made ....

I'm not sure this will solve the problem because it takes 24 hours to see whether drifting with large gap different occurs or not.

A lot of users are probably familar with GNU Screen. I often need to run and see the output of multiple terminals. For example, you may want to see log output in one screen while editing a file in another.

Previously I would do this with multiple terminals, and then later with terminator to group them all together. The problem is that if I lost connection, or switch to working on a laptop, I have to recreate the environment again.

Wouldn't it be great, if I could detach and restore terminal windows (think virtual desktops), and panes easily and continue where I left off?

Enter tmux

For the server that hosts this blog, I wanted to do some application upgrades and I wanted to see with top what the server load was. So I have a window, with portmaster running and top in side by side panes.

On the same server, also I'd like to work on some Plone stuff and would like to edit a file, while viewing some stats from varnish. Instead of opening another terminal, I create another window in tmux, call it Zope and split it into two panes again.

So now when I detach and reattach tmux on this server, I get back to my working environment where I left of with both the portupgrade and Zope window setup as they were. You can do a lot more with tmux then just this of course, but this is the main reason for me to switch to it from GNU Screen.

Applications that need the .Net framework on Linux

The Genting web site gave some challenges to book their shows. It was directing Firefox to install Silverlight (a MS Windows based programme). On Linux, this is done via the Moonlight package. Here are things I tried on Kubuntu 9.10 using Firefox version 3.5.9

1. Installed via the terminal
sudo apt-get install moonlight-plugin-mozilla

Still cant work...maybe its Mono 1.0?

2. Installed the Mono 2.0 via URL http://go-mono.com/moonlight/download.aspx
Still cant work!

3. Installed the prerelease Mono version 3 via the URL http://go-mono.com/moonlight/prerelease.aspx
The size was 13.2Mb
Still cant work! Firefox keep closing (crash) each time I click on that page.

I am sending rwgenting a feedback.

Those websites who choose to use the .Net framework keeps most Linux users away from their services. Unless there are plans to get these fixed. If anyone have gone to rwgenting to do booking of shows on a Linux machine and it works, do let me know how it can be done.

Grailsify legacy ms sql database

I had a problem. I'm developing using grails but my constraint is that I have to use a legacy ms sql database that was created by importing data from excel to access to ms sql. Thus the tables do not have any id field or primary key. And not only that, once I've done my work on my pc, and I do a full dump onto the server using MS own "SQL Server Import and Export Wizard 2008" it does not retain the identity property of the id field (that's auto-increment for all you lucky mysqlers). So when grails try to create a new record it fails. So so sad. But after a few days of depressive wanderings I decided to be a man and solve this. So here's the script in full, of how you would automatically create an id if the table does not have it yet, and if already has, will do the whole recreate process to make the id an identity again. Hope it would benefit someone.

It took a lot of googling to get that much. In that tiny piece of accumulated wisdom is how you would create a cursor so that you can loop over the items, how you would check whether a field exist or not in a particular table, does the table already have a primary key, how to rename column, how to insert value into an identity field by setting identity_insert to on, how to get a list of table fields and turn it into a comma separated string so that you can put that into another query. Phew.. But most importantly it allows me to import and export my ms sql 2008 database and know that this time the id field would still be intact and functioning (after running the script of course).

/me misses mysql, postgres and zodb... :(

Don't Know Jack

The digital audio/music world is totally new to me, so I'm starting from basics and taking one baby step at a time. So I'm starting with the most basic setup with Jack first.

Line-out output from a synth keybaoard to line-in of my sound card. At this stage, you can't hear anything, until that line-in connection is plugged into a recording app and played back, much like what you do with standard desktop setup with pulseaudio. Unless the synth has speakers (most high-end ones don't), or another line-out is connected to a set of speakers, you're not going to know what's being recorded until it's played back.

To do this, you want to be able to monitor (hear) the input, by connecting it to some output. In this case, the line-out of my sound card (playback). You also want this to be in real time.

Jack provides the features to do this.

This sounds overly complicated to hear something, but there are a couple of things in play here.

Keyboard synth being pressed, sends a signal to it's tone generator
Tone generator converts it into audio signal, which is sent to line-out
Line-out audio into line-in of sound card, which converts it into digital signal (Analog to Digital Converter)
Digital signal gets converted and amplified into audio signal (Digital to Audio Converter) in sound card.

In future, all these things may be interchanged with other applications and devices. For example, the keyboard press will generate MIDI output, that will go to a software synth on the PC to generate a digital audio signal, which then goes to an effects processor before going into a recording app. Alternatively, a midi sequencer such as Rosegarden may be sending MIDI output to the synth keyboard to generate sounds.

Before it get's all complicated, let's get the basic connection working first.

Startup Jack Audio Control (qjackctl)

Jack Control will nicely suspend pulseaudio automatically first.

Once it's started, clicking on the Connect button will show under Audio tab, system (my Xonar sound card), and capture_1 and capture_2 (left and right, line-in) as an Output Port and system playback_1 and playback_2 as line-out left and right of the sound card.

You highlight it and click connect. You can of course do cross-overs or merge.

These connections are not saved, and system, capture_1 etc are not exactly intuitive names. As the setup gets more complicated, we're going to need to use the Patchbay, which you can access by clicking on the button.

With Patchbay, you can have aliase's for the devices so it makes more sense, and also be able to save and activate different setups.

Next I'll be learning on how to add basic MIDI support.

iPython Zope buildout

You can get a lot of what you need to do in Plone, simply using the built-in content management tools and web configuration options. This is why I like Plone, it empowers users who know more about the content, to organize and manage their own sites.

A case for example, in which a user would like to have a calendar of all events for their office, on a specific theme, with Plone does not require a technical person to accomplish.

For development, with Archgenxml combined with the content management features above, again, you don't really need much development skills to get what you need done (video).

As we FOSS developers know however, is that you need to develop the features that make it simple for users and that involves writing code, going through code from others and debugging.

Kagesenshi showed me how to debug with Zope debug shell. Unfortunately the shell is kinda painful with no auto completion or history. iPython is much nicer to use.

Luckily it's rather easy now using buildout

Empress Orchid arrived at the most appropriate time. Perfect! By the way, I can’t believe I didn’t buy a single book in 2009. What a hectic life I had.

Look at how battered they are (the red one has been passed around for 4 years!)

This one has been to UK, US, Bosnia, Finland, Canada and now it's in Malaysia!

I bought The Lovely Bone earlier this year coz I’ve been hearing people raved and raved about how good it was. It’s an old book but good ones should have the same effect the very first time you read it. I’m losing touch with my inner nerdness – heh! I used ti visit bookstore often and I used to know what books were good and came well recommended. And mind you I don’t read chicklit except for Cecilia Ahern’s masterpieces ok.

I bet you don’t know what chicklit is. It’s short for chicks’ literature. Books that fall into that category include the Shopaholic series, Devil Wears Prada, Bridget Jones Diary (yes people those are books before they are moviezzz). They’re usually very light read, useful when you’re in stress and need a quick pages of relief during lunch breaks. But I don’t do that. It’s just what I imagine the books for. I couldn’t get myself to finish one of those (except for Ms. Ahern’s) at any given time. And I won’t buy any chicklits anymore, not ever (except for Ms. Ahern’s).

I’m kind of an old soul. I think that’s why I don’t get chicklits. People are mystified why I like History channel so much. Or Discovery or NG, you get the idea. I don’t watch Astro Ria that much, I think it’s purely entertainment, not much substance there. But I don’t watch much news channel either, as I don’t like war and politics. Music wise, I like standards. Yes I do think it’s odd but I like those, especially the lyrics in those times. See? Old soul

Resetting windows password using linux livecd

The application that we are going to use is chntpw. In this example, we will be using ubuntu livecd.

1. Put the livecd in the cd/dvd drive and boot your windows machine from the livecd.

2. Once booted, open the terminal and check for tool named "chntpw". If not there, you can install it using:

$ sudo apt-get install chntpw

3. After the tool is ready, mount the windows partition. Use "fdisk -lu" to check which partition should be mounted. To mount /dev/sda1 (assuming your windows partition is on /dev/sda1), use below command:

$ sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt

4. Find SAM file on the windows partition. Usually it is located in Windows/System32/config. Run the chntpw on the SAM file.

$ cd /mnt/Windows/System32/config

List all user in the SAM record

$ chntpw -l SAM

Interactively edit user credential

$ chntpw -i SAM

5. Follow the wizard of chntpw and clear administrator or any user's password that you want to access.

6. Save changes and restart machine. You can access the windows without password for administrator and users that you have cleared their password. Make sure you take out the livecd, otherwise the machine will boot into it instead of windows.

Happy Place 1.1

I've done some minor updates to my Happy Place. Main addition is a keyboard.

I'm still saving for an S90XS which will take a while. In the meantime, I want to start playing again, and luckily my sister picked up an upright, and had a spare DGX-305 she was not using anymore. It's only got 32-note polyphony, but has MIDI, an instrument bank, split and basic sequencer, but you can still have fun with it, as this dude on Youtube shows.

One shortcoming of Pulseaudio is that you can't monitor input. ie. you can't hear your voice or in this case the line-in input from the keyboard. For this you will need Jack. You'll need Jack also if you want to use MIDI sequencers and DAWs such as Ardour.

Jack can work with Pulseaudio, but it's not perfect, with Pulseaudio source/outputs going into Jack. The biggest problem usability wise for me, is that the volume control no longer shows the ALSA device controls. I have to go use some apps or the CLI alsamixer to change output from speakers to headphones for example. For now it works good enough, that I can play and listen to the keyboard, while still hearing all general system and application sounds. When I'm done and close Jack, I get all the standard Pulseaudio functionality again. I'll have a better writeup, later when I start sequencing and recording.

So now my workspace, is the little creative studio I've always wanted, and Monday morning is that much easier to wake up to.

The Sony Ericsson X10 runs on Android operating system. This is an X window on linux kernel 2.6.29-rel. Its really responsive in my
opinion when I do the following;
1. Using the standard virtual keyboard.
2. Switching between application.
3. Using Timescape to read messages and mediascape for multimedia.

Among the 10 main apps I Installed and will keep;
1. Dolphin web browser.
2. MP3 download.
3. Ringtone Editor.
4. Task manager.
5. PasswdSafe.
6. Astro File Manager +smb module.
7. Connect Bot.
8. Android vnc viewer.
9. EASYNOTE.
10. Mytask.

But i still cant open OOo documents. PDF AND MS WORD WORKED!

Next, android will be on tablet PCs like the Cisco Cius.

fuhhh..lame giller xmenulis..hampir2 lupe ada blog dah...huhuhu..bz tahap perdana menteri dah nie... started 10th June sampai sekarang mmg satu benda yang menghantui idup saya adalah PACKING... x abis2.. after bengkel unit kat INTIM dari 14-16 June..xde keje lain yg saya buat melainkan PACKING... my life was packed with 'packing' thingy...aduihh...penat jgn ckpla.. sampai 2x g 'masat' haaa... tulah..bukan mudah menggapai bintang di angkasa...bukan mudah jalanan ini untuk diharungi.. huhu.. series.. org dgr cam senang je..dpt hlp pegi obesi... belajar enjoy2 jalan2..amik gambo bla bla.. prosesnye tu Masya Allah.. penat okeh.. dan memakai duit yg agak banyak juge okeh.. esp kalau dpt country cam US..mmg byk belanja... OZzy cam saya boleh tahan lagila.. lgpun with the help from agent saya yg sangat baik ati lgi reliable, Mable mmg agak mudah jugakla semua urusan.. tp being a single soul..sana sini sorang diri terkejar2 semua.. hmmm..penat tp semuanya terbayar dgn rasa puas ati sbb semuanye hasil titik peluh sendiri... :)

VLC on SLED 11 SP1 Part Deux

I have received some comments for my previous post on VLC on SLED 11 SP1 that it doesn't seem to work according to what was stated.

Well if all else fail, revert to using the openSUSE 11.1 repos:

zypper ar -f http://packman.unixheads.com/suse/11.1/ Packman && zypper refresh Packman

zypper ar -f http://download.videolan.org/pub/vlc/SuSE/11.1 vlc && zypper refresh vlc && zypper in vlc

If it still won't install try adding these two repos and try installing vlc again:

zypper ar -f http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/multimedia:/libs/SLE_11/ multimedia-libs && zypper refresh multimedia-libs

zypper ar -f http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/multimedia:/xine/SLE_11 multimedia-xine && zypper refresh multimedia-xine

On my T61 with newly installed SLED 11 SP1, the above methods work flawlessly.

VLC on SLED 11 SP1

Out of the box, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 (SLED 11) has no good video playback capabilities. In past (and now) I needed to add the Packman repos for openSUSE 11.1 and get those gstreamer plugins installed. Video playback for me is absolutely crucial as I use my lappy for entertainment as well; by that I meant playing my many downloaded AVIs, RMVBs and MPEGs.

VLC has always been the Swiss Army Knife of media players and VLC has always been sucky on openSUSE 11.1 (which SLED 11 was based on). With VLC 1.10 launched, I decided to give it a go on my SLED 11 SP1. I added the repo, refreshed it and installed vlc:

zypper ar -f http://download.videolan.org/pub/vlc/SuSE/11.2 vlc

zypper refresh vlc

zypper in vlc

I decided to add the 11.2 repo on a hunch, since there are numerous upgrades and additions to SP1.

So far it has been working well and I have no problems with any video or audio playbacks.

New job, new things to learn.. gotta get in line..

It's been 3 weeks since I've started my new job at a big corporation. Transition into this new job was not easy and even now there is still a lot of pain of adapting. The biggest source of the pain? WINDOWS!!! T.T

Being a big corp, it's almost a requirement that your reliance on all things microsoft has to be solid and deep rooted. Of course we have open source equivalent for most of the stuff but the pressure is on for me to perform and to present some tangible results as soon as possible thus I barely had time to put some basic best practices in place. But finally after 2 days of googling and tweaking, I've got a small pc running ubuntu server serving trac for ticketing and serving out our main mercurial repo. We don't even have the basic infra yet and still management says "these are things are nice to have, but you need to deliver those reports soon. Our deadline was last month".

Then when starting to do development, I start to see how deep the rabbit hole goes. Never mind about the ton of spaghetti code we have to tangle with, database management (this is just our internal development database mind you) consist of importing excel file into access and using odbc to push those tables to ms sql server. Ha. Seamless I tell you.. >.

So of course there is nothing in the open source world that can match that kind of right click send seamlessness. So for now I concede I have to use windows. At least until most of our database stuff is fully in the ms sql server and I can connect to that directly. But the pain of working in windows.. oh my.. Even looking for text in all the source code is not as easy as 'grep -ir something'. I think I miss grep the most. But of course I miss all the rest of our little treasure trove of command line tools to make dev so much easier. How I wish I had a 'tail -f' in one window of terminator while I restart the server and redo the query in another.

But I'm already here now and I should square my shoulders and get in line.

Some interesting thing I've learned already is how to set the default gateway for windows for example. You just do a:


route change 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0

That is to change the default gateway if it already exists. Want to know whether it already exists? Print it out:


route print

And also for setting up tomcat6 cgi, edit the conf/web.xml file in the tomcat root directory. Inside there you would see already commented out parts for cgi config. Just remove tags from 2 parts:

And then you have to change the conf/context.xml file to enabled privileged like this:

Just one more note on changes to tomcat to enable awstats. You need to enable the combined log for it to work. For that edit the file conf/server.xml and at the end of the file you might find something like this:

               prefix="localhost_access_log." suffix=".txt" pattern="combined" resolveHosts="false"/>

Release it from it's remarked prison and change the pattern from "common" to "combined".

Learned quite a lot these past few weeks so I guess that's very good. Still have to use windows so that's pretty bad. But plus minus it all, it's still pretty good.

To check hardisk information such as model and serial number, there are a few useful commands like hdparm, sdparm and fdisk.

To check the information about first hardisk for PATA and SATA hardisk:

# hdparm -i /dev/sda

For SCSI disk, a different command is to be used:

# sdparm /dev/sda

To check the hardisk capacity and partitions contained in the hardisk, fdisk can be used:

# fdisk -lu /dev/sda

If your hardisk is smart compatible, you can refer here on how to install and use smart to find information and monitor the health of your hardisk.

Fallacy

In logic and rhetoric, a fallacy is a misconception resulting from incorrect reasoning in argumentation. By accident or design, fallacies may exploit emotional triggers in the listener or interlocutor (e.g. appeal to emotion), or take advantage of social relationships between people (e.g. argument from authority). Fallacious arguments are often structured using rhetorical patterns that obscure the logical argument, making fallacies more difficult to diagnose. Also, the components of the fallacy may be spread out over separate arguments. -- Fallacy Wikipedia

It's not in my nature to argue, I prefer to just walk away in a silent fit. That being said you can't avoid it and often times you have to argue to make your point or call out a fallacious statement.

The problem in our current society is that with our TLDR (too long; didn't read) culture, all too often short nothings and fallacious arguments are taken as inarguable fact. These are then posted on a million tweets and then experts, lobbyists and politicians will stretch and build on it into authoritative articles and opinions.

Who has time to read background material on the points being made? You can however detect quickly if the short arguments are already wrong at some point.

I've made some fallacious statements here, but I'll leave that as an exercise for the reader.

Rhetorical arguments are nothing new. Cavemen probably argued whether to hunt mammoths or seals, around a campfire.

"Seal plentiful, but small! Mammoth hunt I say. Ooga! Ooga!"

Since the time of the Greek philosophers, many a wise man (or woman) has broken down fallacies so that they can argue better, or make better judgements on what is being said.

I'll go through some common ones here,

Sweeping Generalization:

"I downloaded this open source accounting app I found on the Internet. You get no support with open source!"

Problem, lack of support for one open source application, does not mean it applies to all.

False Cause:

"You can't earn money with open source if everybody is allowed to copy my software freely.

There is no necessary cause and effect between being able to copy freely this dude's software and not being able to earn money with open source.

Appeal to Law:

"Malay rights are enshrined in the constitution, therefore I'm not making a racist statement, but supporting a view that is supported by our constitution."

"The police said, they were not being overly aggressive when raiding the house of a family, on a tip-off that one of their Linux PCs had technology that circumvented digital protection mechanisms. These people broke the law, they were criminals."

Where laws/regulations are used to support a moral position.

False analogy:

"The value of drugs are in the millions and it's the death penalty. Laws need to be stronger for piracy, because billions are lost by artists" - actually spoken by MPAA rep Malaysia!

Arguably the financial values are similar, but the crimes are very different. Joe Downloader and Joe Drug Dealer isn't a good analogy to put it politely.

Appeal to Novelty:

"If you upgrade your PC, it will be faster."

A fallacy all geeks should be aware off. Not every new trend or technology is better. Pentium 4, Vista and Ubuntu 9.10 are recent examples. Ditto with needing to "stay in touch" with friends and family via Facebook. Taking time to visit family and spend time with friends does wonders for staying in touch on a level beyond "status updates".

I'm not sure which this one falls under,

"Governments should not set standards via regulation, but allow the market to decide software standards."

This is actually also a fallacy, or maybe mulitiple fallacies. The problem here is that the government will set the standard regardless of regulation. If the public needs to communicate with the government through standards set by that software. If it's a closed standard, it won't even be a free market, but a government endorsed monopoly market. This is also another type of red herring often used by Microsoft/BSA. Using terms such as market, when market could mean many things. For example,

"Let the market decide."

If it's a monopoly market, that's basically saying, let us decide, but they're getting people to assume they mean a "free and open market".

Ad Hominem:

"You can't accept this Doctor's findings that there were strangulation marks on the neck. He smoked marjuana when he was a student."

Politicians love this one. A version of Red Herring arguments, where you attack the person's character, not the argument.

You need to be even more critical of people you think are saying things for what you believe are good cause. Human nature as it is, you tend to give people on your "side" a pass.

"Dionysius claimed that findings of a group of fisheries scientists have predicted that globally, in another 40 years, we run the risk of not having any seafood to eat if we continue to consume indiscriminately." - WWF Malaysia

False attribution - "findings of a group of fisheries scientists" Who?

Also a few faulty generalizations. Not having any seafood to eat in 40 years sounds like a global extinction level event within my lifetime if I consume indiscriminately? What is consuming indiscriminately? Later in the article http://www.thesundaily.com/article.cfm?id=47697 we find out that it's specific species of seafood (probably live/fresh). Entire small scale rural fishing industries could be wiped out if statements like this are not said more carefully and taken at face value.

WWF would have done better here to provide, a good clear statement such as,

"Stocks of large local fish and shrimps such as Ikan Merah, which Malaysians love to eat are dwindling fast according to Malaysian Fisheries department. These local delicacies may no longer be available within several years. We are publishing a guide, which will inform how consumers can help prevent this by being discriminate about the types of seafood they order or purchase."

The press can still create sensational and fallacious titles, such as,

"Fish Head Curry won't be available soon if we don't act now!"

OK could be better, I shouldn't quit my day job to be a journalist.

For a full list, see List of Fallacies on Wikipedia. Some of you may know a lot of it, without knowing the exact definition of the fallacy, but it's worth checking them out so you can be more critical and spot problems in arguments quicker before you accept or disagree with them.

Getting netbios name in linux

If you are using linux and administering a network full of windows machine, there is a tool called nbtscan to easily scan through the network and list all machines with their netbios name.

To install nbtscan in fedora:

# yum install nbtscan

To use it on single machine(let's say the machine's ip is 10.0.0.100):

# nbtscan 10.0.0.100

To scan the whole class C and list netbios names:

# nbtscan 10.0.0.0/24

To scan ip range:

# nbtscan 10.0.0.10-100

To get all options to use nbtscan:

# nbtscan -h

Unforgettable holiday

Just came back from having a holiday with the family at Lumut. It was quite an ad-hoc decision to follow my parents to Lumut on the family day of their respective companies. So they have already left for Lumut since last friday evening, we didn't even start to get ready till saturday morning. By around 11 am we were already on our way. Looking it up on google maps, estimated time of 3 hours 23 minutes means we should arrive there just about a little bit late for lunch. That was our initial hopes.

Once we were on the road, we didn't exactly know which way to go. And even though I've looked it up more the less on google maps before, I didn't bother much about it because I thought my brother knew the way. Well, we were supposed to get off the highway at Bidor. We didn't realize that till we called our father a little after we just passed the Tapah exit. So we had little choice but to exit at Gopeng. And we got lost more within the maze of village roads and mark less landscape. Finally we arrived at Lumut around 5 pm. That's a good 6 hours, twice the estimated time for us to arrive.

We reached Lumut, exhausted and hungry. We ate a road side stall and they charged us quite outrageously I think. Finally we went to Teluk Batik, and we were even more disappointed by the humongous crowd there. I guess it is the weekend crowd, compounded with the school holiday crowd, compounded with even there was going to be a karaoke contest later that night crowd which we heard of at the stall we ate before. Even to get into the washroom was a long queue of at least 20-30 people OUTSIDE of the washroom building, never mind about the people still doing the 'washing'. But at least my kids got a nice ride at the battery cars & bike. RM 2 per ride. Seeing their happy faces after such a long day was such a great relief.

That night went to eat dinner, I don't even remember the name of the restaurant now. The food wasn't all that great. It tasted ok, but nothing to write home about. And the lights... Oh the lights.. Just while we were eating the whole restaurant (we'll, actually it was just a bigger road side stall) just went out. The whole place turned completely dark. Not once, not twice, but three times... By the third time we were done eating and decided not to spend any more time there.

Then the next day (today), I started to have a very sore throat. Actually it was already quite sore on saturday morning and I feel I was going to be unwell. And I guess compounded with all the stress of travel and all, by this morning it hurts for me to even swallow my own saliva. The pain almost makes me squirm. Eating breakfast was not a very pleasant experience. It was the usual nasi lemak buffet and the rendang ayam was quite nice, but the pain of swallowing stopped me from even thinking about taking seconds.

Then we went to the beach. Finally there wasn't too much people there. There was still a lot, but not as if you were in a mall on sale. And I finally had my first experience riding the banana boat. That's basically a long float where around 7-8 of us sit on and pulled by a speed boat. The speed boat would make a quick turn in the deeper waters which would make us all tumble over into the water. It was quite exciting. But then faced the unsurmountable problem of getting back on the float with a body as heavy as mine. Trying hard to pull myself on it, I nearly gave up. Good thing my brothers were able to pull me up. By the time we got back on, I just wanted to go back already. Was so exhausted. After a bit more playing in the water and the sands, we went back, cleaned up, checked out. Went to Lumut to have lunch and again I think the price was pretty outrageous.

Then we started to head back. Again, I didn't really know the way. And forgetting that I didn't know the way, we stayed back to buy some stuff at the Lumut Bazaar and didn't follow my father back. And so out of my ignorance, rather than heading to Teluk Intan where we would finally go back on the highway at Bidor, I went towards Klang. Oh my God. What a trip that was. I realized we probably made a mistake an hour or so later when there was still no sign of highway at all. And we ended up going through Sabak Bernam. And B44, Jalan Sungai Panjang, was one heck of a unmaintained road. It was like riding a speed boat on land. I had to drive slowly so as not to be thrown right off the road. It was painfully long and tedious to get through. By the end of it my nerves was really frizzled out already. Finally we went out onto the highway again somewhere at Behrang if I'm not mistaken. Felt so good to finally be on a road that you're sure off. Now finally the vacation is over and tomorrow is another day of work. I think I'm more tired now than before. This is certainly a vacation I won't soon forget.

btw, di tengah exam ni jugakla masalah bertimpa mcm domino.. lappy diserang virus..bukan 1, bukan 2..tp beratus.. then ext.hdd corrupt.. data dr 2004 lenyap sekelip mata.. tu semua dah cukup utk menyusahkan hati dan idup ni.. tp demi kemjuan kerjaya.. i tend to mcm pejam mata, butakan hati, tutup telinga... ape nk jadi, jadilah wahai lappy & ext hdd ku..aku nk abiskan exam dulu.. and now, exam was over.. baru nk pikir, what to do.. hmmm...skrg ade masalah terkini...my lappy xleh access gmail.. and also sbb blog guna gmail maka xleh log in blog juge maka xleh update maka sangap dan bersawangla blog.... hmmm FANTASTIC!!! apelagi nk corrupt..haaa...corruptla.... corrupt.. corrupt...grrrr...

and semalam after exam..adalah demam..till today..batuk dh tahap pedih dada nie.. pasni nk singgah farmasi cari ubat...pastu backpain ni mmg xilang2 kesan stress exam dan 2 jam setengah membongkok spt hunchback of notre dame.. hmmm..serious sgt kalau nk pk semua masalah..cam nak campak je laptop org lain ke dinding... hahaha.. (lappy sendiri adalah sayangg okehhh walaupun die menternak virus+xleh bukak gmail+giller corrupt)...

tak taulah sbb aku dah tua ke dah matang ke dah malas ke atau mmg dah ilang separuh rasa.. masalah dtg byk2 ni aku xdelah meroyan sgt mcm selalu.. still cam aku hidup cam bese.. and selalunye aku ni xleh ade benda xkena dgn brg2 aku..time2 tu jugak nk betulkan..nk cari solution xkire ape dah.. tp kali ni aku lebih cool...hahahah..mungkin ini ageing signage.. aduihhh...bagus kot tp xsuke....

Convert AVHCD to AVI and burn as VCD

Getting AVHCD from a video camera into a PC a making it into a VCD. This is a weekend project.
Next, AVIs are great for the PC, however, to distribute to people who do not use PCs to watch movies or just to have a larger screen, it is better to convert the AVI into a VCD.

Step 1: Copy the files from the AVHCD camera
CAMERA: /media/disk-1/PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM
PC: ~/Documents

Step 2: Convert to AVI.
Future action can consider direct preparation for MPG. Here it is in AVI because there was a need for me to prepare in various format apart from MPG or VCD.

Start KDENLive
- File -> Save As ->
- Project -> Add clip
- In the Project Tree window, drag the clips into the timeslots (bottow window)
- Click Render button ->AVI DV

Step 3: Get the converter programme called vcdimager
$ sudo apt-get install vcdimager

Step 4: Convert to mpg and the cue / bin
ffmpeg -i inputfile.avi -target pal-vcd outfilename.mpg
# create the cue and bin files. The label did not allow for spaces.
vcdimager -t vcd2 -l"Martha-Swimming-May-2010" -c vcd2.cue -b vcd2.bin outfilename.mpg

Step 5: Using K3B, choose project for Burn Image
Insert a blank CDROM
Image to burn ->Select the .cue file.
Image type ->Cue/bin

Click "Start"

Add Screensavers in KDE4

Screensavers are graphics that replaces the normal desktop screen when it is idle too long (it depends on the user setting). This should reduce the burnout of the screen and also hides the desktop contents from passing eyes.

Default install of Kubuntu did not have any of the nice screensavers. Check the screensavers by choosing the KMenu ->system Settings
Choose the General tab ->Desktop ->Screen saver

To install additional screensaver, use the Software Management such as KPackagekit or synaptic and install

kscreensaver-xsavers-extra

This can also be done at the terminal by typing
$ sudo apt-get install kscreensaver-xsavers-extra

This installs

If you ever are into open source software, eventually contribution of codes becomes part of the cycle. Trolltech from Oslo, Norway popularised the QT, which is a set of programming libraries that is used to develop graphical applications. In Linux, there is the KDE desktop manager that uses the QT libraries. Other popular applications that use QT are Opera,

Here is a guide to get started with QT programming (qt4 in this case) on Kubuntu 9.10. You will need the demo and the Graphical development tool

A. Setting up the environment
Step 1: Install the libraries and compilers. This include libraries such as "QLabel" and QLayout from the QtGui
$ sudo apt-get install build-essential kdelibs4-dev libqt4-qt3support libqt4-assistant

Step 2: Install the demos
$ sudo apt-get install qt4-demos

Step 3: Configure Linux to compile with qt4 instead of the default qt3
$ sudo update-alternatives --config qmake

Step 4: # install the Graphical development tool
$ sudo apt-get install kdevelop

Step 5: Read info on QT4 through the manuals at /usr/share/qt4/doc/html/index.html
$ assistant-qt4

B. General programming setup of project, compiling and execute

Step 1: Create the source files. E.g. .cpp, .h, etc.
Just copy from the demo files in /usr/lib/qt4/examples. I will use files from the example tabdialogs.
$ cp -r /usr/lib/qt4/examples/dialogs/tabdialog/ ~
$ cd ~/tabdialog

Step 2: Create the project file. The project file (.pro) define headers, sources, form and other files which the application consists of.
$ qmake -project

Step 3: Compile
$ qmake
$ make

Step 4: Run the programmes.
$ ./tabdialog

Alternatively, use the KDevelop to manage the project. Start KDevelop and open to .pro file.
$ kdevelop

Creativity Exercise

A lively conversation yesterday, brought up an interesting exercise from my high school days. It's why I think Malaysian system of streaming Science and Arts is limiting our students. This exercise also highlights why having as much knowledge and observing all the things around you is important for ideas.

The exercise, is to have a large piece of paper with about 25-50 empty boxes, with some sort of constraint. In this case a horizontal line. You then have to fill it up with illustrations. Here is a few.. try it.. trust me, it gets harder to be unique as you go along. Unique as in not doing variations, eg. road and beach are variations of the line as a horizon.

If I didn't do music, I wouldn't know about music notation. Bah, I still can't draw a treble clef after all these years, but I digress. Players of racquet sports, know that net line perspective all too well. The narrower your experiences, the harder it gets to draw inspirations from.

A wave is a curve to an artist, a sin function for a mathematician, a tone for a musician and a cool experience for attendees of the upcoming world cup.

If you get shoehorned into just doing one thing, you lose all the different enriching experiences and perspectives.

What makes http://planet.foss.org.my a fun read is getting all the different insights for me, not just frameworks and shell scripts, but stuff like paint ball tactics.

Hey, one of those obstacles could work as another picture now for me.

TK3!! aduhhh.. nak xnak kene amik sekarang.. xde mase lagi dah.. and kalau x, mmg ketinggalan dr kawan2 la jadinye.. di sini saya amat perlukan motivasi dan sokongan rakan2.. hehehe.. perlu kekuatan spiritual dan physical yang mantap di saat2 bedebor nk kene ptk lak nie.. huhu.. wish me luck yg sgt luck ye.. :)

Backup and restore mysql databases

To backup(dump) single mysql database to a file:

mysqldump -u foo -p foodb > foodb.sql

where -u is for username, -p is for mysqldump to ask for password, foodb is the name of the database and foodb.sql is the file to dump the database.

To backup(dump) all databases to a file:

mysqldump -u foo -p --all-databases > alldb.sql

where -u is for username, -p is for mysqldump to ask for password, --all-databases is to tell mysqldump to dump all databases available and alldb.sql is the dumpfile name.

To restore back mysql database from dumpfile:

1. From terminal

mysql -u foo -p foodb < foodb.sql

-u and -p are similar to above, foodb is the name of the database and foodb.sql is the name of the dumpfile.

2. From inside mysql console where you have to access mysql console first:

mysql> source foodb.sql
or
mysql> \. foodb.sql

where foodb.sql is the dumpfile
